AMD roadmap revealed, six- and twelve-core processors coming

amd_logo2.jpg Advanced Micro Devices today revealed its roadmap detailing new processors with up to twelve cores. Shanghai is the first one of the new generation of CPUs with HyperTransport 3.0 for processor-to-processor communication. It also features increased L3 cache of 6MB, and core and instruction-per-clock (IPC) enhancement. The six-core Istanbul fits into the current socket (1207) and is planned to be available for 2P and above configuration, and leverages AMD's Direct Connect Architecture which alleviates the system communication bottlenecks in other processor.

In 2010, AMD expects to introduce 3G AMD Opteron processor socket G34 platform. It is planned to offer DDR3 memory capabilities, and AMD RD890 chipset for non-coherent HyperTransport 3.0, along with an additional HT link.

AMD is also planning to release six- (Sao Paolo) and twelve-core (Magny Cours) Opteron processors in the first half of 2010.
