AMD Introduces Stream Processor

amd.jpgAMD has launched what it calls a "stream processor", which is made with the help of ATI. The processor is based on the R580 graphics processor used in ATI Radeon X1900 graphics cards. It can give massive performance of about 375 GFlops. The processor which was introduced at the Supercomputing 2006 show down in Tampa, Florida, provides 1 GB of GDDR3 memory. AMD also offers CTM (close to metal) technology, which can increase processing application performance by as much as eightfold more than traditional 3D application programming interfaces. CTM promises "unfettered access to the native instruction set and memory" of the GPU.

AMD expects streaming software to surface within the next two years.
