Advanced Micro Devices is planning to launch a high-end desktop dual core processor to give competition to upcoming Core 2 Duo E6850. The Athlon 64 X2 6400+ features 3.2GHz frequency and 2MB L2 cache, and will be the last processor in the Athlon 64 X2 family. According to Digitimes, performance of the 6400+ is 10-15% below the E6850, and the CPU has limited overclock capability.
The firm has already sent processor samples to motherboard makers in order to allow them to update their BIOSes. The price of latest Athlon processor will range between $220-248.
