7 Japanese companies come together to develop a super CPU. To challenge Intel

7 Japanese companies, One goal — beat Intel at its own game. Under the guidance of Japanese government, 7 biggest name in Japanese industry — Toshiba, Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic, Renesas Technology, and Canon — have joined hands to develop a super CPU. According to agreement, the companies will together pool in their resources to develop a new, standardized, power-saving processor.
The whole project is supposedly being financed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, with an initial capital of 3-4 billion yen ($32-$43 million).
Basically the whole purpose of this project is to develop an energy efficient processor which consumes 70% less power.
Interesting thing about its design is that it would be powered by solar cells.
The final product should be ready by 2012 and would be used in a wide range of consumer devices including TVs, cameras, etc.
