Cuba lifts PC ban, anyone can now officially buy computer
This news will definitely hit you hard if you're still ignorant about Cuban government's ridiculous ban. The Cuban government today lifted the PC ban that had restricted general public from buying a computer in this internet age. What's strange is that under the old law government officials were allowed to buy computers, and only the honest, tax paying citizen were restricted. But now, as the communist government lifted the ban, I am sure the life of Cubans will change for better.
The sad thing is, only one model is available as of now. The QTECH PC, costing $780, features Intel Celeron processor, 80GB hard drive, 512 RAM, DVD drive, CRT monitor, standard keyboard, mouse, and Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. The computer seems expensive but its expected of government to make some money on this (via taxes).
Another depressing thing is that most of the people will not be able to access internet in spite of owning a PC as even internet access is restricted -- only selected government employees and senior journalists are allowed to use it. But Cubans should worry much as internet restriction too could get lifted under new president's rule. Raul Castro, who assumed the presidency on February 24 after his ailing 81-year-old brother Fidel resigned, has already ended bans that kept most Cubans from having cell phones, staying in luxury hotels or renting cars. So there's a ray of hope for people.
