A new, improved backlight uses fewer LEDs, thus reducing the cost and power consumption

Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) has developed a new LED-based backlight for use in keyboards that provides excellent brightness and uniformity, along with the opportunity to use fewer LEDs, thus reducing the cost of the backlight and power consumption. The backlight design uses the company’s patented MicroLens light extraction technology and optical engineering expertise to extract more light from the backlight through to the keyboard, increasing brightness while spreading the light more uniformly.
The backlight design employs side-firing LEDs, which can be located on the edge of the light guide, or in some cases, in the middle of the backlight, depending on the surrounding geometry.
