The XO Machines to be available by February
Launched with a lot of hype, the One Laptop Per Child project is finally on the go. The project, targeted towards underdeveloped countries promises to provide a laptop at a cost of $100 to every underpriviledged child who needs one. Many countries like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan and Thailand have already booked their orders and the test machines should reach children as soon as February. The machine sports 512MB of flash RAM, no hard disk, and a 366 AMD processor. It runs a modified version of Linux called Sugar. It seems that Negroponte is very happy with the laptop because he is ready to give up his real one for XO. Instead of information being stored along the organizing principle of folders and a desktop, users of the XO machine are encouraged to work on an electronic journal, a log of everything the user has done on the laptop. A demo of the Sugar operating system is available for download and comment.
