Dell and Microsoft announces RED branded products to help eliminate AIDS in Africa

dell-microsoft-red.jpg Dell has teamed-up with Microsoft to fight AIDS in Africa. Under this strategic tie-up, Dell will offer unique RED branded personal computers and a printer, mostly with a touchup, at a premium price. With each purchase of a RED branded Dell PC, Dell and Microsoft will make a combined contribution of $50 to $80, depending on the PC purchased, to the Global Fund. And purchase of a Dell RED printer generates a $5 Dell contribution. One hundred percent of the funds contributed go to Global Fund-financed grants in Africa.

This donation will certainly make you lighter by couple of bills as the difference between a Dell product and a Dell RED product is quite huge. For example: Dell XPS One basic model retails for $1299, while the same model under RED branding retails for $1,599 -- $300 more with addition of Vista Ultimate and Office Home and Student 2007.

The XPS 1330 and XPS 1530 laptops retail with a starting price of $999 and the same models under RED branding goes for $1,149. No doubt RED comes with Vista Ultimate, but it would be of no use unless you upgrade RAM as the basic models comes with only 1GB RAM (you can't run Vista Ultimate on 1GB RAM).
