Helsinki to recycle heat from data center to generate energy and deliver hot water!

Now this is what I call meaningful use of latest technology! Reportedly, Helsingin Energia, a Helsinki public energy company is planning to recycle heat generated from a new date center to generate energy and deliver hot water for the Finnish capital city. Of course it won’t be enough to run the entire city but even if you use small amount of “green” energy for special purposes it is ultimately savings in “black” energy, reducing our dependence on energy derived from fossil fuels.
The recycled heat from the data center will add about 1 percent to the total energy generated by Helsingin Energia’s system in the summer.
Actually it is a clever technique to use heat generated by truck loads of servers in data center. As data centers are power hungry and generate big amount of heat, it is a very good idea to use the same energy to provide much-needed green energy to all households in the form of heated water.
Kudos to Helsingin Energia!
Hope other companies follow it’s lead.
