Abu Dhabi planning to built a chip foundry plant
Word on internet has it the State of Abu Dhabi is planning to built a chip foundry plant in four years time. This news doesn’t come as a surprise as the state already has a relationship with AMD through its spin-off called Globalfoundries. Abu Dhabi, through its company Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) is planning to make a wafer fab plant in the region, and is expected to become operational within four years. The plant will manufacture semiconductors, and will directly compete with Taiwan’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
“In four years, you’re going to see the first foundry here in Abu Dhabi,” Waleed Al Muhairi, chairman of ATIC and the COO of government firm Mubadala Development Co., said. “It’s the kind of industry-changing move that Abu Dhabi has been behind,” he added.
