Seagate cranks new hard drives

Seagate today announced a host of hard drives (total nine new products) -- each designed for different kinds of users -- which focus on data security and increased capacity to meet the explosive worldwide demand for all types of digital content. The new products are Maxtor storage solutions, 1TB desktop drive with full disc encryption, up to 60GB Seagate D.A.V.E. (Digital Audio Video Experience) technology platform, max 1TB DB35 Series, 250GB notebook drive, and the SV35 Series digital video surveillance hard drive. The 7200rpm 1TB Barracuda FDE is the world’s first 3.5-inch desktop PC drive with native encryption to prevent unauthorized access to data on lost or stolen hard drives or systems. By simply deleting the encryption key the information on this drive can be easily erased and the data rendered unreadable.

The Momentus 5400.4 notebook hard drive comes in 2.5-inch form factor with 5400rpm speed. Based on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology the drive offers max 250GB storage capacity with Serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/second interface. Its operating and non-operating shock resistance is 325 Gs and 900 Gs, making it ideal for systems that are subject to rough handling or high levels of vibration.

The 3.5-inch Cheetah 15K.6 hard drive in the Cheetah line up is built for demanding transaction-intensive enterprise servers and storage systems. Compared to previous generation drives it provides 28% increase in sustained data transfer rates and lowers the power consumption by 61%, according to the firm. Using PMR tech and coming in 450GB, 300GB, and 147GB size the Cheetah 15K.6 transfers data at 164MB/sec and provides a choice of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Fibre Channel (FC) interfaces.

The Maxtor OneTouch 4 family features new tools that provides you with the ability to perform multiple-computer data synchronization, drag-and-drop encryption and a bare metal system restore. In the case of system crash, Maxtor’s SafetyDrill allows restoration of an entire computer ensuring access to files even in a time of crisis. The Backup software suite automatically backs up your entire data. Due to the password protected folder no one can play with your data. The Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus comes in 250GB ($130), 500GB ($200), 750GB ($290), and 1TB ($360) capacities. Regular travelers can go for the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini which is available in 80GB ($100), 120GB ($120), and 160GB ($150) size. With classic design the Maxtor OneTouch 4 comes in 250GB ($100), 500GB ($170), and 750GB ($270) versions.

The DB35.4 family with 1TB for digital video recorders (DVRs) and home media centers allows you to capture 200 hours of exciting HD television. According to Seagate the media-optimized hard drives perform reliably at the industry’s highest operating temperature – 75° C – improving system reliability and increasing the field life of DVRs and home media centers.

The momentus 5400.4 is expected to ship in the fourth quarter of calendar 2007, while the Barracuda FDE will come in 2008. The Cheetah 15K.6 and DB35.4 family of hard drives are scheduled for a release in Q1 2008.
