InPhase tapestry holographic storage solution to come in May

inphase_tapestry.jpg Finally, the next generation storage solution is here. The InPhase tapestry will be available from May for about $18,000. Yeah, its too expensive, meaning most of us aren't going to use it for couple of more years, but the benefits offered by this solution deserves this price-tag. One of the main advantage of this system is that it can safely store data for about 50 years, and as there's no direct contact between media and drive head, there'll be no wear issues even after tens of millions of reads.

How does it work?
Holograms use 2 coherent laser beams - a reference beam and an illumination beam - to create an interference pattern that is recorded on photo sensitive media. Shine a laser on the recorded interference pattern and the original image is reconstructed in glorious 3D. As the laser moves around - or you do - you see the image from different perspectives.

The tapestry will retail for $18,000 + $180 for each 300GB media.
