Supercomputer with 20 million processors planned

supercomputer.jpg Yeah, that's true. Researchers at University of Berkeley are actually planning to built a Supercomputer featuring 20 million processors, providing a peak performance of 200 petaflops! Reportedly, the supercomputer will be used for accurate climate studies and will be built using ultra-efficient embedded RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) CPUs. Wondering what would be the cost and power requirement of such a monstrous system? Well, the power consumption of such a system is estimated at about 4 Mega Watts and the approx cost is $75 million.

So, what would a 200 PFlop system be able to accomplish?
According to the researchers, such a computer would make global climate change predictions more understandable and more credible.
