As of now one thing that is holding everyone's attention in the software world is Google's Chrome OS. And finally yesterday in a press conference Google detailed its highly-awaited operating system. So what is it all about? Well, there is a one word answer for that. WEB. Yes, Google Chrome is all and only about the internet. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.
(Video after the jump)

Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn't trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer. Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code. If your system has been compromised, it is designed to fix itself with a reboot.

Also, Google is working hard on improving general computing speed. The Chrome OS will take out all unnecessary processes, optimizing many operations and running everything possible in parallel. This means you can go from turning on the computer to surfing the web in a few seconds. What's more, Google is also specifying reference hardware components to create the fastest experience for Google Chrome OS.

Too excited? Well, get hold over your excitement because Chrome OS will only be ready for consumers around end of 2010.

There are two major things to report regarding Apple's upcoming Tablet PC. The first one is pretty interesting. According to industry sources, the Apple Tablet will feature an OLED display! Reportedly, Apple has gives LCD contract to two firms, Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology with one of them manufacturing a 10.6-inch TFT LCD panel while the other will produce a 9.7-inch OLED panel.

Currently a 9.7-inch OLED panel costs around $500 and panel costs normally account for about 30% of the device's total cost, meaning Apple's 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC is expected to have a cost of about $1,500-1,700.

On the other hand the 10.6-inch LCD panel-based Apple tablet PC is expected to priced in the $800-1,000 range.

Second news, being sad is that Apple will only unveil its Tablet PC in the second half of 2010.

Intel today announced that it has made multi-million Euro investment in its European lab, where it'll work to create a computer chip that will be 1000 times faster than today's fastest supercomputers. The effort is part of Intel Labs Europe, Intel’s research network of 900 researchers in the European region, and will help create Exascale machines that are able to process 1 trillion – or 1 million million million – instructions per second.

Intel will support the Exascale Computing Research Center with a multi-million Euro investment over a 3-year period.

The French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique), the Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University (Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) and the French National High-Performance Computing Agency (Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif) will combine to match Intel’s contribution.

The Exascale Computing Research Center will combine French research expertise and high-performance computing vision with Intel’s leading products, technologies and experience in this area. The lab will employ about a dozen people initially and is expected to eventually grow to about three times that number.

No matter how complex and powerful computers become they can never match the processing power of our brains. And as it is human nature to mimic natural phenomenons in order to find solutions to human problems, IBM is working on a project to built a computer based on insights from human brain. Today IBM reported that it has moved a step closer in creating such a computer.

At SC 09, the supercomputing conference, it announced significant progress toward creating a computer system that simulates and emulates the brain’s abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition, while rivaling the brain’s low power and energy consumption and compact size.

The cognitive computing team, led by IBM Research, has achieved significant advances in large-scale cortical simulation and a new algorithm that synthesizes neurological data -- two major milestones that indicate the feasibility of building a cognitive computing chip.

The firm has built BlueMatter, a new algorithm created in collaboration with Stanford University, that exploits the Blue Gene supercomputing architecture in order to noninvasively measure and map the connections between all cortical and sub-cortical locations within the human brain using magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging.

Mapping the wiring diagram of the brain is crucial to untangling its vast communication network and understanding how it represents and processes information.

These advancements will provide a unique workbench for exploring the computational dynamics of the brain, and stand to move the team closer to its goal of building a compact, low-power synaptronic chip using nanotechnology and advances in phase change memory and magnetic tunnel junctions.

The team’s work stands to break the mold of conventional von Neumann computing, in order to meet the system requirements of the instrumented and interconnected world of tomorrow.
